As we all were preparing ourselves for the year end shenanigans, a bunch of friends in their late thirties were celebrating one of theirs birthday on the 28th of December at one of the restaurants at Kamla mills; while the place had always been a commercial land for the city, in last of couple of years numerous Eateries also opened up in the spaces. A fire broke out at midnight at one of the restaurants which then spread along to few more restaurants resulting in the breakout of a humongous fire blast. The four storey building of Senapati Bapat Marg was the one hit with the tragedy. The estimation so far states that 14 people have been killed & 19 more have been severely injured and two guests are still in critical conditions. Most of the victims died were due to the suffocation that was caused by the fire.
The people injured are undergoing treatment at KEM and Sion hospitals, and the rescue teams and water tankers were brought in to the scene quickly. According to the reports, the fire started at one of the restaurants and spread pretty fast to the adjacent restaurants. At the end of the scene, 3 restaurants suffered damage along with people injured.
Fire officials said they received the first call at 12.27 a.m. and they rushed eight fire engines and fire tankers to the spot. The blaze was initially declared as a Level II fire but upgraded to Level III at 12.42 p.m. as the fire spread.
According to the fire control room, the fire was reported to have broken out at a restaurant called ‘1 Above’ located in Kamla Trade House.
Eyewitnesses, including several journalists working in media organisations situated in the same compound, said the fire spread fast and affected two adjoining diner-cum-pubs.
Police have booked Hratesh Sanghvi, Jigar Sanghvi and Abhijeet Manka of C Grade Hospitality, which manages the pub, along with others, under IPC sections 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others).
It’s upsetting to have such a tragic incident occur so close to happen on the occasion & moments of Happiness! It just reminds us life can struck us at any moment and to value it’s worth every second!
