It’s Diwali season, and with the many lights and festivities around, it’s also time for some serious Diwali cleaning. It’s then that we realise that we have a lot more than we use, and definitely a lot more than we need. Donate your old clothes, belongings, books and lighten up another’s life. Here are a few amazing Mumbai-based NGOs who are going to get your things to the right people.


Goonj is an NGO which contributes cloth and other necessities to rural communities as reward for labour. They are accepting donations all year round, and now is the best time to dig out your things.

They are accepting children’s clothing, saris, old toys, books, school materials, office equipment, furniture, footwear {all in good, usable condition}

Zaroorat By Green Yatra

Zaroorat, an initiative by the NGO Green Yatra. You can donate your old clothes, stationery, utensils, bedsheets, books {in good conditions} and they will repair the goods and distribute it to underprivileged people in villages and slums.

Wishing Well

Wishing Well is an organization that started off with making a mobile library for children, and now they connect donors and volunteers with the appropriate NGOs in the city.

You can donate everything from clothes, books {preferably not reference or college-level books}, toys, household and electronic goods in good condition.

Donate by sending an email to donate@wishingwellonline.org with what you wish to donate. They even pick up the items from your home if you are located between Jogeshwari and Colaba.

Bal Anand

Bal Anand is primarily an NGO in Chembur that works to give permanent residential homes to abandoned, orphaned underprivileged children up to 6 hours of age.

You can contact them on 91-22-25202262 between 10:30 am to 6:30 pm {Monday–Sunday} to donate clothes and other items too.

Dharavi Art Room

A unique NGO which focuses on expression and creativity, Dharavi Art Room is run by Himanshu and Aqui. They conduct art classes for students in the slum areas of Dharavi and expose them to different mediums of expression. They are accepting donations in kind of toys, art supplies, colours, storybooks and drawing books for children. Prayas Ek Koshish

Based out of Andheri, Prayas – Ek Koshish is a not-so-profit cothat works towards objectives such as recycling clothes, donating items to different neglected sections of society. They are accepting clothes, shoes, bags, accessories, electronics, computers right now. At the moment, the NGO is also accepting help for ingredients, specifically rice, atta, dal, cooking oil, tea powder, poha onion and potatoes for certain families.
