The Versova Beach Cleaning campaign that had began in 2015 initiated by Afroz Shah a 33 years old lawyer took two years with every Sunday’s work by so many citizens cleared the whole 2.7 km stretch of the beach. The results have pulled out a new enthusiasm in the citizens to make all beaches of Mumbai as clean as they are suppose to be. Thus, after Versova beach looks new as ever, the Dadar beach clean up plan is now underway and volunteers are gathering every Sunday to do the deed!
A group of 25 volunteers in Mumbai have taken the task for the Dadar beach clean up program. After Versova beach was such a success, why stop at that? The entire 2.1 km stretch is slowly being rid of tonnes of plastic and other wastes out there. This clean up program is being led by a Thane local Chinu Kwatra and mostly residents of Byculla, Sion and Prabhadevi are gathering to do the needful.
The project is currently in its 37th week and the volunteers have cleaned up a lot of alcohol bottles, plastic waste, paper waste and more. They are also encouraging around the area to install dust bins and avoid using plastic bags and bottles. The most remarkable achievement of this clean up program is that the volunteers have so far managed to clean up 222 tonnes!
